Akadama is a specialist inorganic growing medium from Japan. It’s a naturally occurring granular mineral that’s formed as a result of volcanic eruptions. Akadama has become very popular as a soil for bonsai trees and cacti, and is renowned for its ability to retain large amounts of water while still providing good drainage and aeration. It has a porous structure and won’t degrade in the same way as organic growing media.
Grand Akadama is heat treated at over 300°C to harden and sterilize the grains. Some growers use this product on its own, while others prefer to combine it with other ingredients such as pumice and perlite in their soil mixes. I’ve found Akadama to be a particularly good medium for species which grow naturally in ultramafic substrates, such as Nepenthes rajah.
